The Symposium on the Structure and Stellar Populations of the Milky Way and Nearby Galaxies was held in Lijiang, Yunnan Province

The Milky Way and nearby galaxies are key research subjects for revealing the laws of galaxy formation and evolution. Within the Milky Way, precise observations can be made of massive numbers of individual stars, while nearby galaxies provide large-sample data covering a wide range of environments; the two are highly complementary. At present, with the rapid accumulation of stellar and galactic survey data, research on the Milky Way and nearby galaxies is ushering in unprecedented development opportunities.

To further promote in-depth cross-disciplinary exchange and integration between the two fields, give full play to the complementary advantages of observations, and deepen the understanding of galaxy structure and evolution, the "Symposium on the Structure and Stellar Populations of the Milky Way and Nearby Galaxies" was held in Lijiang City, Yunnan Province, from August 2 to 5, 2026. The symposium was hosted by the South-Western Institute for Astronomy Research (SWIFAR) of Yunnan University, co-organized by Beijing Normal University, and supported by the National Key R&D Program project "Frontier Research on the Nearby Universe and Time-Domain Astronomy Based on the Mephisto Sky Survey Telescope and High-Energy Astronomy Satellites." Participants registered on August 2, academic presentations and discussions were held on August 3 and 4, and the symposium concluded on August 5. More than 40 experts, scholars, and graduate students from universities and research institutions—including the National Astronomical Observatories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the University of Science and Technology of China, Beijing Normal University, Xiamen University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou University, Nanjing University, Inner Mongolia University, and Yunnan University—participated in the symposium.

The symposium focused on frontier research directions such as multi-wavelength observations, structure and dynamics, and stellar population properties of the Milky Way and nearby galaxies. During the symposium, participating experts and scholars delivered excellent academic reports and engaged in in-depth and lively discussions. In addition, the symposium held special discussions on the potential contributions of the Mephisto Sky Survey Telescope in the above fields, and the participants offered active suggestions on its survey planning, scientific goals, and data applications.

The successful convening of the symposium advanced the better implementation of the Mephisto Sky Survey Telescope's high-precision true-color survey, promoted collaborative cooperation in research on the structure and stellar populations of the Milky Way and nearby galaxies, and effectively strengthened cooperation and exchange among domestic scholars in related fields, laying a solid foundation for giving full play to the scientific potential of the Mephisto Sky Survey Telescope and enhancing China's international influence in galaxy formation and evolution research.
