清华大学毛淑徳教授来访并作学术报告

Prof. Shude Mao from Tsinghua University visited SWIFAR

10月12号下午，清华大学天体物理中心毛淑徳教授应邀访问中国西南天文研究所，并为研究所及物理与天文学院师生作学术报告。

毛淑德教授研究领域广泛，包括星系动力学、引力透镜、星系形成、系外行星寻找等。此次报告中，他介绍了利用SDSS-IV MaNGA巡天的积分场光谱数据开展星系动力学分析，并进一步研究星系的初始质量函数和三维物质分布形状等若干结果。报告结束后，师生们就星系形成和演化等相关问题与毛淑德教授进行了深入交流。

毛淑德教授简介：

毛淑德教授于1992年获美国普林斯顿大学天体物理系博士学位。1992年起至1999年先后在美国哈佛-史密松天体物理中心、德国马克斯普朗克天体物理研究所进行博士后研究工作, 2000年起受聘于英国曼彻斯特大学，历任讲师、副教授及天体物理中心教授。2010年至2014年任中国科学院国家天文台研究员、星系宇宙学部主任科学家、中国三十米望远镜项目科学家。2014年10月起任清华大学教授、天体物理中心主任。研究兴趣为星系动力学、引力透镜、系外行星寻找等。

       

Prof. Shude Mao from Tsinghua University visited SWIFAR on Oct. 12, 2018. He gave a colloquium presentation on dynamical modeling of MaNGA galaxies. The SDSS-IV MaNGA survey will eventually obtain integral field unit spectroscopic data for about ten thousand galaxies in the nearby universe, and currently more than half of the data have already been collected. In the colloquium, Prof. Mao  discussed how dynamical modeling of these galaxies can be used to probe their intrinsic properties, including the initial mass function of star formations, three-dimensional shapes of stellar distributions, and their systematic variations across the mass-size plane. After the talk, he had an extensive and stimulating discussion with the faculty and students at SWIFAR.

Brief introduction to Shude Mao

Shude Mao is now a professor of astrophysics at Tsinghua University. He obtained his PhD at Princeton University in 1992, and were postdoctoral fellows at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and the Max-Planck Institute for astrophysics, respectively, afterwards. He joined the faculty of the University of Manchester in 2000. He returned to China in 2010 as a research professor at NAOC. Since 2014, he has been a professor at Tsinghua University.  His research interests include galactic dynamics, gravitational lensing, and extrasolar planets.
