Prof. Feng Yuan from SHAO visited SWIFAR

Prof. Feng Yuan from Shanghai Astronomical Observatory (SHAO) visited SWIFAR on May 24, 2018. He gave a colloquium presentation focusing on active galactic nuclei (AGN) feedbacks in isolated galaxies. The studies are based on high-resolution two-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations with the most-updated AGN physics included. By analyzing the light curve, typical lifetime and duty cycle of AGNs and star formation, he showed that their simulation results are in general agreements with the observations. After the talk, he had an extensive and stimulating discussion with the faculty members and the students at SWIFAR on numerical simulations and the potential to implement their detailed AGN feedback mechanism into cosmological simulations.

Personal Information:

Feng Yuan is now a research professor in Shanghai Astronomical Observatory (SHAO). He received his Ph.D. in astronomy in 1997 from University of Science and Technology of China. From 1998 to 2005, he worked as a postdoc at Nanjing University, Max-Planck Institute of Radio Astronomy, Harvard University, and Purdue University, respectively. He joined SHAO in 2005 under the CAS 100 telent program. His research interests include black hole accretion mechanisms, AGNs and their feedbacks on galaxy formation and evolution, black hole X-ray binaries, and planet formation.
