Activities of radio AGNs: from accretion disc to host galaxy

Speaker: Yijun Wang (NJU)

Venue: SWIFAR Building 2111

Time: 12:45 PM, Monday, Mar. 24, 2025

Abstract:

Radio AGNs are essential to our understanding of both the physics of black hole (BH) accretion and BH-galaxy coevolution. Recent deep and wide radio continuum surveys have made it possible to study radio AGNs down to lower luminosities and up to higher redshifts than previous studies, and are providing new insights into the abundance and physical origin of radio AGNs. Based on the deep radio continuum data with multi-wavelength data in the GOODS-N, GOODS-S, and COSMOS fields, we identify ~ 1000 radio AGNs. We derive the probability of star-forming galaxies (SFGs) and quiescent galaxies (QGs) hosting a radio AGN, as a function of stellar mass, radio luminosity, and redshift. Radio AGNs in QGs prefer to reside in more massive galaxies with higher radio luminosity than those in SFGs. Radio AGN fraction increases toward higher redshift in both SFGs and QGs, with a more rapid increase in SFGs. To investigate the central engines of radio AGNs, we further study the fundamental plane of black hole activity for our radio AGN sample. Radio-quiet and radio-loud AGNs show significantly different fundamental planes, which indicates that they have significantly different accretion physics and X-ray emission origins of their central engines.
