Abstract:
The inner structures of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) are compact and can often only be resolved indirectly in the time domain using the reverberation mapping technique. Recent reverberation mapping studies have found that the ``measured'' AGN sizes are too large to be consistent with the classical disk processing model (hereafter, the disk size discrepancy). A number of new models have been proposed to resolve this discrepancy. In this talk, we will review the disk-size discrepancy and related theoretical models. Furthermore, we demonstrate that future reverberation mapping campaigns focusing on special AGNs (e.g., X-ray faint AGNs, lensed quasars, and changing-look AGNs) can critically test theoretical models and reveal the key physical processes in AGNs.
