Colloquium on Nov. 7, 2023

Dedicated hydrodynamical simulations of M31, Magellanic stream and dwarf galaxies

Speaker: Yanbin Yang (Paris Observatory)

Venue: SWIFAR Building 2111

Time: 15:00 PM, Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2023

Abstract:

The Local Group includes two main disk galaxies, i.e., the Milky Way and Andromeda galaxy (M31), and relatively less massive galaxies such as M33, Magellanic Clouds, as well as many other dwarf galaxies. Today, in an era of the explosion of data, we are deepening our understanding of each of the galaxies in morphology, stellar composition, chemical composition. Especially with the data releases of Gaia, we are able to measure the position, velocity and mass of each of them. In principle, the problem of “the dynamical formation history of the Local Group and its galaxies” is solvable. However, when we consider galaxy-galaxy interactions, galaxy interaction with inter-galactic medium, as well as the internal evolution of galaxies, the problem becomes much more complex and difficult, and we have to use hydrodynamical simulation to reproduce the observational properties of each galaxy. I will introduce a project that studies the dynamical evolution of galaxies based on VLT integrated field unit spectroscopy, and some dedicated hydrodynamical simulations of the galaxies in the Local Group.
