Lunch talk on Oct. 30, 2023

A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF ERUPTIVE ACTIVITIES BETWEEN THE SUN AND LATE-TYPE MAIN-SEQUENCE STARS

Speaker: Hong-peng Lu (Guizhou University)

Venue: SWIFAR Building 2111

Time: 12:30 PM, Monday, Oct. 30, 2023

Abstract:

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are violent ejections of magnetized plasma from the Sun or other stars. CMEs are the largest scale eruptive phenomena in the solar system. Solar CMEs can trigger geomagnetic storms and endanger satellite operations and destroy electrical infrastructures on the Earth. Stellar CMEs are the primary driver of exoplanetary space weather and may affect the habitability of exoplanets. However, to date, there has not been a single case of a stellar CME event that has been recognized by the academic community. In this report, based on observations and theoretical research on solar flares and CMEs, I will introduce our exploration of the detection of solar/stellar CMEs from the following three aspects: 1) Detection of CMEs based on the SDO/EVE EUV full-disk integrated spectra; 2) Detection of CMEs from late-type main-sequence stars based on LAMOST time-domain spectra; 3) Multi-wavelength joint detection of stellar superflares and CMEs.
