Microlensing sheds light on the detection of strong lensing gravitational waves

Speaker: Xikai Shan (BNU)

Venue: Video Conference

Time: 12:30 PM, Monday, Jun. 5, 2023

Abstract:

The detection of strong lensing gravitational wave (SLGW) events provides an invaluable opportunity to investigate a wide range of scientific inquiries such as precision cosmography, enhancing localization precision in binary black hole (BBH) observations, and testing general relativity. However, the identification of SLGW events is challenging due to the poor sky localization caused by the long-wave nature of gravitational waves. In this talk, I will introduce a novel identification method that utilizes the microlensing wave optics effect inherent in SLGW. Specifically, the long-wave nature of gravitational waves allows microlenses, including stars and compact objects within lens galaxies, to produce diffraction or interference patterns in the waveforms. These patterns serve as distinct signatures for strong lensing events. In addition, I will present an efficient and precise algorithm for evaluating the Fresnel-Kirchhoff diffraction integral.
