Colloquium on Jun. 23, 2022

Supernova remnants and magnetars in the dense interstellar medium

Speaker: Ping Zhou (NJU)

Venue: Video Conference

Time: 16:00 PM, Thursday, Jun. 23, 2022

Abstract:

Marking the spectacular deaths of stars and white dwarfs, supernovae (SNe) are among the most energetic explosions in galaxies. SNe leave supernova remnants (SNRs), which play an important role in heating the interstellar medium (ISM) and chemical enrichment of galaxies. Core-collapse SNe also creates compact remnants such as neutron stars, which share the birth conditions with the SNRs. I will talk about how we can learn the SNR origin and chemical feedback through multi-wavelength observations of SNRs in dense ISM. I will also discuss magnetars and their birth conditions as revealed from their host SNRs.
