Lunch talk on Mar. 14, 2022

Exoplanet characterization by photometry and spectroscopy

Speaker: Xianyu Wang (NAOC)

Venue: Video Conference

Time: 12:30 PM, Monday, Mar. 14, 2022

Abstract:

Thousands of exoplanets have been discovered. It opened a wealth of opportunities to discerning nuances of the planetary formation and evolution processes. Photometric transit and spectroscopic radial-velocity observations play dominant roles in the characterization of exoplanets. In this talk, I will introduce two projects I actively participated in: 1) Transiting Exoplanet Monitoring Project (TEMP) is initiated to refine system parameters, update ephemeris, and detect transit timing variations (TTVs) by long-term, high-quality photometry from 1-meter-class ground-based telescopes, and 2) Stellar Obliquities in Long-period Exoplanet Systems (SOLES) aims to derive projected spin-orbit angle of exoplanet systems by using high-resolution spectrographs (e.g., Keck, NEID, APF). I will conclude my talk with the implication of our observation on planet formation theory.
