Colloquium on July. 26th, 2018: Mapping Dust in 3D with Gaia and DECam

Speaker: Gregory Green (Stanford / SLAC)

Venue: Gewu 4410

Time: 10:00 AM, Thursday, 26th July, 2018

Abstract: By providing parallaxes to over a billion stars, Gaia is opening up a new era in the study of our Galaxy. Combining Gaia with large photometric surveys, we will be able to map the interstellar medium and stellar populations with unprecedented accuracy and detail. In this talk, I will discuss ongoing efforts to survey the Southern Galactic Plane with the Dark Energy Camera at Cerro Tololo, Chile, and to combine this photometry with Gaia parallaxes in order to map Galactic dust and stars.

Personal Information: Gregory Green is a Porat Fellow at the Kavli Institute for Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology at Stanford/SLAC, researching the interstellar medium of the Milky Way and near-field cosmology.
