Special colloquium on Jun.25th, 2018: Interacting binaries: their donor stars, accretion discs and late evolution

Speaker: Vitaly Neustroev (University of Oulu, Finland)

Venue: Gewu 4410

Time: 2:00 PM, Monday, 25th June, 2018

Abstract:

Interacting binary stars such as cataclysmic variables (CVs) and low-and high-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs and HMXB) provide an unparalleled way to study two fundamental astrophysical processes: binary star evolution and nearly all aspects of the accretion of gas onto compact objects. In my research of these objects, I have mostly been basing on observations because our general understanding of binaries with compact components and theoretical progress is often driven by new observational discoveries. In this talk I will highlight recent progress in this field and shortly describe the following topics of my current research interests: a) a study of late evolution stages of CVs and LMXBs; b) accretion discs and accretion flows in interacting binaries; c) a mass distribution of black holes and neutron stars. I will also discuss how the Mephisto project can help to make progress towards a better understanding of the properties of interacting binaries and their evolution.
