Cold Gas in Galaxy Evolution: Connecting Galaxies, Halos, and the Cosmic Web

Abstract:

Cold gas provides the fuel for star formation and plays a central role in the baryon cycle of galaxies. Over the past decades, the HI surveys have provided a wealth of data to understand the role of cold gas. In this talk, I'll introduce our work using the HI gas a tracer to probe the whole baryon cycle. Our key findings are: (1) the total reservoir of HI in a halo depends on the formation history; (2) HI acts as the mediator in the baryon cycle, connecting the gas supply from the cosmic web and the star formation within the galaxies.
