(Sub)-millimeter VLBI: Transcending the Quest for Resolution
Speaker: Wu Jiang (SHAO)
Venue: SWIFAR Building 2111
Time: 12:45 PM, Monday, Mar. 16, 2026
Abstract:
I will introduce the cutting-edge technology, millimeter/sub-millimeter Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) in radio astronomy. For the scientific applications, I will report mm-VLBI has achieved great success in black hole physics. From measuring the mass of supermassive black hole to capturing its first image, as well as investigate the jet dynamics near the black holes. Regarding the technological development, I will introduce the most advanced technique, simultaneous multi-band VLBI. A brief update on Tianma telescope and global mm-VLBI stations, some early experiments and results will be presented in details.
